CHARACTER SUMMARY

The very respectable Chief Cultivator, Hanguang-Jun, Second Jade of Gusu Lan (he has a lot of fancy titles) and lover of rabbits, a teenage Lan Wangji is introduced to us as a model student of his clan, rather unsociable and stand-offish because who needs friends when you have 3000+ clan rules to uphold? Things change once he meets Wei Wuxian who thrusts friendship upon him, and when things go to shit with this platonic soulmate of his, he begins to see that the world does not exist in simple black and white as he begins to develop his own sense of morality severed from his clan teachings.

Dealing with his own failings and grief after Wei Wuxian's death, fast forward many years into adulthood and one resurrection later, now Lan Wangji does pretty much only what Lan Wangji wants to do, even if it means discarding those sacred clan rules. It's just hard to tell because he masks it well in logical reasoning or that ever-present politeness.

Also as a side note, "what Lan Wangji wants" can usually be translated as "what will make Wei Wuxian happy". A Professional Yearner™ for almost 20 years, apparently he can compose music and name it after their ship name, but can't tell a guy he likes him. Yeah.
